According to the American Geological Institute USGS, the earthquake occurred at 18.10 local time (15.40, GMT) and the epicenter was located about 60 kilometers north-west of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim.
Land telephone communications were interrupted temporarily at Gangtok and mobile networks were overloaded, preventing communication with the earthquake.
The first information provided by the authorities show no major damage or casualties.
